The Yankees were able to extend their winning streak to six straight games and take out their brooms for the second consecutive series, as they swept the Orioles yesterday 6-4. The Yankees were also able to cushion their spot in 1st place, moving two games ahead of the Boston Red Sox, who were swept yesterday by the Texas Rangers. The Yankees, since moving into first place, now have the best record in the American League and the second best record within both the AL and NL, behind the Dodgers. (Yankees: 57-37 Dodgers: 61-34).
The Yankees were able to keep first place all to themselves last night, after defeating the Baltimore Orioles 6-4. The Red Sox lost 4-2 to the Texas Rangers, resulting in a second place standing in the division. The Yankees received “OK” pitching from their newest starter Sergio Mitre, terrific offense, and flawless relief pitching, to give the Yanks their 56th win of the season pushing their winning percentage over .600 (.602 %)

The Yankees swept Detroit today, defeating the AL Central leading Tigers 2-1 Sunday. Before the game, the Yankees hosted its 63rd Annual Old Timer’s Day. One familiar face to young Yankee fans was Mike Mussina. It was weird seeing him depicted as an Old Timer. Anyways, I always love watching all the Old Timer’s take the field for the Old Timer’s Game. Seeing players like Yogi, Guidry, Ford, Larsen, Zimmer, Cone, Girardi, and Mussina is really special for fans young and old. Hats off to these guys!

The New York Yankees were able to move within two games of first place, defeating the Detroit Tigers 2-1. The Yankees received stellar pitching from CC Sabathia and offensive help from Alex Rodriguez. With yesterday’s win the Yankees have now won 15 of their last 20 games, marking the best stretch of games this season for the Bombers.
~Just thought I’d update you on the Yankee players and their stats as they approach they second half of the season. (Top 3 for each category)
The Yankees followed their sweep of the Twins, with another sweep…but this time, it was the Angels doing the sweeping. The Yankees lost their 3rd game in a row yesterday, resulting in a sweep by the Angels. New York had plenty of opportunities to score against the Halos by loading the bases twice, but couldn’t capitalize, losing 5-4.
Well, its that time in the season where the first half seemed to have flown by. Many teams have shown that they are contenders, early, and are winning their way to the top of their division. Unfortunately, the Yankees are second in their division, but are 1st in the Wild Card. Anyways, before I start grading the Yankees on their performance during the first half of the season, I would like to update you on the standings.
Burnett and Pettitte) and leads the starting rotation in ERA with 3.70. He has also pitched 2 complete games through the first half of the season, and is the only Yankees pitcher to do so, so far. He has 89 strikeouts while only walking 41. If he can keep up the good work, he could be in line for between 15-20 wins.
